Glossary
Ever wonder what all those technical terms, acronymns, etc. meant? Well, we had the same questions so now we’re passing this information onto you, our reader. This page will define any terms and acronymns we’ve come across. As time passes we’ll update this page as well. We’re just providing a quick defintion, as well as the source for our definitions.
The format we’re using below is as follows:

- term = is the technical term or acronym we are defining
- definition = the definition we’ve discovered for the term or acronym
- (reference #) = the source or sources we used for the definitions. We use a number here which corresponds to the list of references listed at the end of this post.
Terms and Acronyms
- ASCII – American Standard Code for Information Interchange; a sequential formula for representing English characters as numbers (5)
- Blog – Web Log; a chronologically ordered series of Web site updates, written and organized much like a traditional diary (1)
- ccTLDs – Country-code TLDs; for Web sites and registrants of a particular geographic location (7)
- CSS – Cascading Style Sheets; provides more control over formatting options when editing HTML pages (3)
- Domain - is a Web address, such as ourmoneyadventue.com, that is linked to an IP address (which represents a physical point on the Internet) (7)
- FTP – File Transfer Protocol; allows you to move, copy, delete, upload and download files across the internet (3, 5)
- HTML – HyperText Markup Language; scripting language of the World Wide Web developed in the late 1980s and early 1990s for describing Web pages (3, 5)
- HTTP – HyperText Transfer Protocol; a set of computer communication instructions viewed over a Web page (3, 5)
- HTTPS – Secured HyperText Transfer Protocol; a set of computer communication instructions viewed over a secured Web page (5)
- hyperlink – special instructions in HTML code that “link” to something else on the internet (3)
- ICANN – Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (7)
- PHP – HyperText Preprocessor; a widely-used general-purpose scripting language that is especially suited for Web development and can be embedded into HTML (4)
- Protocol – A set of rules that governs how information is to be exchanged between computer systems (5)
- SLD – Second-Level Domain; the part of the domain name located to the left of the dot (ourmoneyadventure.com) is called the second-level domain name. The second-level domain name is the “readable” part of the address and refers to the organization or entity behind the Internet address (7)
- rTLDs – Restricted TLDs; require registrants to represent a certain type of entity or to belong to a certain community (7)
- TLD - Top-Level Domain; or domain extension, is the part of the domain name located to the right of the dot (ourmoneyadventure.com) (7)
- WordPress – free blogging software (2)
- W3C – World Wide Web Consortium; it develops interoperable technologies (specifications, guidelines, software, and tools) to lead the Web to its full potential (6)
- www – World Wide Web; the backbone routing to millions of pages of information available to the general public (5)
- XML – eXtended Markup Language; a flexible way to create common information formats and share both the format and the data on the World Wide Web, intranets, and elsewhere (5)
